Integrated Rural Development Initiatives (IRDI)

IRDI is a community development organisation based in Kampala, Uganda, who seeks to promote sustainable natural resource management in the communities it works with. KAFAMI was formed with the close support of the Mbale branch of IRDI.

Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD)

FSD is a non-profit organisation based in the Bay Area, USA. KAFAMI was formed with the support and sponsorship of FSD. FSD interns have worked alongside KAFAMI members in the conception, forming, and development of KAFAMI and its activities.

KAFAMI was formed in summer 2005, under the wing of IRDI, from a group of 39 farmers pulled from various community-based groups around Kaato Sub-County. It was set up to overcome the obstacles faced by farmers which prevented them from getting a fair price for their crops - namely, that of poor access to markets and information about products and prices. It was also hoped that forming such a group would provide strength in numbers, and give the local farmers who are members of KAFAMI a sense of community, by holding group training sessions and events.
